ALL EYES ON YEMEN AS IT HOSTS MAJOR DEMOCRACY CONFERENCE
By Abu Bakr Abdullah
SANA'A, JAN. 8 (SABA) - The Regional Inter-Governmental Conference on Democracy, Human Rights and the Role of the International Criminal Court is opening in Yemen's capital Sana'a on Monday.
The watershed political event bears a special significance since it takes place in a volatile Middle East where all countries seem to realize the need for co-withstanding challenges such as the implementation of democracy and human rights.
Much international interaction to the Euro-Yemen initiative for organizing the event is noticed. The conference is supposed to contemplate a wide range of options for the countries of the region to keep pace with the international framework of political reforms.
Yemen's multi-party democracy is a firmly established experience by now, although it occurred as an about-turn in 1990. Over a decade, three general elections, one local council elections and one presidential elections were held.
The organization of the conference in Yemen ushers in a host of new horizons of partnership between Yemen and the European Union, the second biggest power in the world especially as the latter has shown a genuine interest in cementing the partnership by opening an office in Yemen.
