MORAL SUPPORTER

The Financial Times - March 7, 2007 A year ago yesterday police waded into a crowd of female protesters in Istanbul with tear gas and truncheons as they demonstrated for greater equality. International Women's Day tomorrow will see moral support for Turkish women from Margot Wallstrom, the EU communications commissioner. The Swede known as Saint Margot to avid readers of her blog will not be on the streets. But she will meet senior Turkish politicians (all male) and visit a community centre for female refugees. "It's the first time the Commission has done a high-profile visit on women's rights," says one of Margot's minders. "But we won't be going on any demonstrations." So she may not be able to emulate one of her predecessors, Emma Bonino, another feminist, who managed to get arrested by the Taliban when they were running Afghanistan.
