FORUM FOR DEMOCRACY AND REFORMS BEGINS TODAY

The Peninsula - May 27, 2007 The Heir Apparent H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani will open the Second Forum on Democratic and Political Reforms in the Arab World at the Doha Sheraton today. The two-day conference is being organised by the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) under the patronage of the Emir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. Prominent leaders, civil society groups representatives and human rights activists from the Arab world are attending the forum. H H Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missnad will address the concluding session of the conference on Tuesday, where the recommendations and the final declaration will be announced. More than 500 delegates from different parts of the world are attending the conference. They will assess the current situation of human rights in the Arab world and come out with recommendations to promote the culture of civil rights society among the Arab populations. The conference will discuss eight major topics distributed on separate workshops. These include civil society and political parties; constitutions and laws; women, youth and political participation; the role of media and information technology in enhancing democracy; governments, parliaments and transparency; the role of private sector in enhancing democracy and government; Islam, minority and democracy; and the role of foreign influence in democracy changes. Colonel Ely Ould Mohamed Vall, former Chairman of the Military Council, Mauritania and Marshal Abdulrahman Siwar Al Dahab, former Chairman of the Transitional Military Council, Sudan will also address the opening session. This will be followed by a general session being chaired by Dr Khalid bin Mohamed Al Attiya from NHRC. The speakers are Dr Salim Alhoss, former Lebanese Prime Minister, Sadiq Al Mehdi, former Sudanese Prime Minister, Dr Aziz Sidqi, former Egyptian Prime Ministerm Dr Saad Eddin Ibrahim, Head, Ibn Khaldoun Centre, Egypt and Prof Radwan Masmoudy, Head, Centre for the Study of Islam & Democracy, the US. On the last day there will be general session titeld " European vision on the progress of democracy in the Arab World: Present and Future," to be attended by Emma Bonino, Minister of International Trade and Minister for European Affairs, Italy.
