ELEVEN MEPS CALL ON EU TO CHANGE ITS ATTITUDE TOWARDS TUNISIA

Eleven MEPs have sent a letter to the president of the Commission, Romano Prodi, to protest against the political situation in Tunisia, while Radhia Nassraoui, a Tunisian lawyer, has begun her third week of hunger strike to protest against the immprisonment of her husband, Hamma Hamami, the leader of the Tunisian communist labour party. The eleven MEPs (Emma Bonino, Daniel Cohn-Bendit, Harlem Désir, Benedetto Della Vedova, Olivier Dupuis, Hélène Flautre, Monica Frassoni, Cecilia Malmstrom, Pasqualina Napoletano, Roseline Vachetta, François Zimeray) call on President Prodi to forcefully approach the Tunis authorities so that all persecution against Mr Hamami and his family cease. The Commission is invited to take "every initiative possible to make the policy of unconditional support to Carthage's dictatorship stop and for the EU's policy towards Tunisia to be based on the affirmation of democracy and rule of law".
