BONINO: MILITARY OPTION NOT A ROAD TO FOLLOW

ANSAMed - January 24, 2014

'I never believed in it and continue not to believe in it'
Italian Foreign Minister Emma Bonino on Thursday said a military solution to the Syrian crisis is not an option to be pursued. Speaking to Radio Radical about the war-torn country and a peace conference on Syria dubbed Geneva 2, Bonino said 'I never believed and continue not to believe in a military solution which is not the road to follow'.
The minister was responding to a question on statements by US Secretary of State John Kerry who said Wednesday that the military option 'is still on the table'. Italy will 'seek in every possible way' to put pressure on the Geneva peace conference on Syria to have 'concrete results on the ground', the minister added.
'I think the acceleration, the pressure, should be made in an attempt to immediately provide for the populations a sense of respite, even if it is not total, in other words to give concrete results on the ground which can only come from a ceasefire and the access at least of humanitarian aid', Bonino said. 'I think pressure should be exercised on this or at least this is what Italy will try to do in every possible way'.

Geneva 2: Bonino, different options on the table
Italian Foreign Minister Emma Bonino told Radio Radicale on Thursday in an interview on Syria and the Geneva 2 peace conference that ''several options are on the table' expressing the hope that 'results will be a little clearer in the coming hours and in the next few days''.

The 'options of discussion on the table', Bonino confirmed, include an exchange of prisoners between the sides involved in the conflict on which Russia, the US and the UN are working, as outlined Wednesday by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Geneva 2: Bonino, pressure needed for results on the ground
Italy will 'seek in every possible way' to put pressure on the Geneva peace conference on Syria to have 'concrete results on the ground', Italian Foreign Minister Emma Bonino told Radio Radicale on Thursday.

'I think the acceleration, the pressure, should be made in an attempt to immediately provide for the populations a sense of respite, even if it is not total, in other words to give concrete results on the ground which can only come from a ceasefire and the access at least of humanitarian aid', the minister said. 'I think pressure should be exercised on this or at least this is what Italy will try to do in every possible way'.
