TSUNAMI, BERTOLASO: MAXIMUM TRANSPARENCY IN AID MANAGEMENT

AGI - 28 June 2005 The management of the Italian aid funds donated via text message to the peoples struck by the tsunami on the 26th December 2004 "is absolutely transparent" said Civil Defence chief Guido Bertolaso, speaking at the presentatation of the motion submitted by a group of senators, led by Green Party member Fiorello Cortiana, asking that the funds collected be not dispersed, or worse still, used to foster sex tourism, particualry strong in south east Asia. "Not one single euro of the almost 50 mln collected will foster, in any way, this despicable market" guaranteed Bertolaso, stating that the Civil Defence and at least 15 NGOs are monitoring on this, as well as a specific Monitoring Committee featuring Andrea Monorchio, Giorgio Napolitano, Giulio Andreotti, Emma Bonino and Giuliano Amato. "Two of them are currently in Sri Lanka, to make sure the aid we provided is actually taking place. When they come back, tomorrow evening, they will tell us how things are going on and how we are spending the money the Italian people, not the government, gave us". Bertolaso is absolutely certain about one thing: "as a country, Italy has been an example in how to promptly deal with the emergency, but we also want to prove we know how to run the post-emergency, with all activities being above suspicion".
