LUCA COSCIONI HAS BEEN AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE AN EXEMPLE FOR ALL OF US
Rome - February 25, 2006
Luca Coscioni, President of Radicali italiani and of the Luca Coscioni Association died last monday, 20 February 2006 at his home in Orvieto, Italy. He was 39.
For 10 years, Luca had living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, which obliged him on a weelchair, taking away his voice and making it progressively impossible for him to eat, drink and breath. He died of respiratory complications.
To communicate and carry out his political struggle in favor of embryonic stem cell research, Luca used a computer to write and to have his voice heard through a vocal synthesizer. Over the last six years, he led the Radicali Italian and founded an Association for Freedom of Scientific Research, which only a few days ago convened the first meeting of the World Congress for Freedom of Scientific Research that was opened by his video message.
In 2001, Luca ran for the Italian Parliament with the Lista Bonino, his candidacy was supported by more than 50 Nobel Prizes and thousands of scientists, researchers and University Professors.
The commitment and strength of Luca's struggle for freedom and scientific progress has been and will continue to be an example for us all, for people of science as well as for all those that are affected by various diseases, for which the progress of research - if allowed and supported at all levels - can be a hope for better future.
