IRAN: GIRL SPARED FROM HANGING

AKI - January 16, 2007 A Tehran court has overturned the death sentence given to young Iranian woman, Nazanin Fathi, who was a minor at the time she killed one of a gang of men who tried to rape her and her younger niece. Hundreds of prominent figures worldwide campaigned to save Fathi from the gallows, including Italy's European Union affairs minister, Emma Bonino, and Nobel laureate for medicine and Italian life senator, Rita Levi Montalcini. Fathi - previously a victim of rape - was sentenced to death on appeal for bludgeoning to death the would-be rapist in self-defence when she was 17. Iran has executed at least 11 people this year, and is the country after China that puts to death the highest number of people annually.
