EMIR: ITALIAN LEADER CHAIR ROUND OF TALKS

The Gulf Time - November 13, 2007 A round of talks between Qatar and Italy was held yesterday under the chairmanship of HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani and Italian President Giorgio Napolitano. The talks were attended by Minister of State and head of the mission of honour accompanying the Italian president, HE Abdullah bin Khalifa al-Attiyah, Minister of Finance and Acting Minister of Economy and Commerce HE Yousef Hussein Kamal, Emiri Diwan chief HE Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Saud al-Thani, Economic Adviser at the Emiri Diwan and Secretary General of the Development Planning Secretariat HE Ibrahim al-Ibrahim, HE Sheikha Hind bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, Director of the Foreign Ministry’s European and American Affairs Department Ali Fahd al-Hajiri and Qatar’s Ambassador to Italy Sultan Saad al-Marikhi. Attending on the Italian side were Minister of Foreign Trade and EU Affairs Emma Bonino, Vice Foreign Minister Ugo Intini, Ambassador Giuseppe Maria Buccino Grimaldi and members of the official delegation accompanying the Italian president. The Emir conferred on the Italian president the Collar of Independence. The talks dealt with bilateral ties of friendship and co-operation and ways of further enhancing them, besides regional and international matters of common concern. The Emir then hosted a luncheon banquet in honour of Napolitano and his accompanying delegation. The banquet was attended by sheikhs, cabinet ministers, the Advisory Council speaker, other dignitaries and heads of diplomatic missions. In the evening HH the Emir and Napolitano opened a Qatari-Italian visual arts exhibition at the Fahd bin Ali al-Thani Palace Museum. The opening ceremony was attended by HH Sheikha Mozah Nasser al-Misnad. Others attending were HE Abdullah bin Khalifa al-Attiyah, HE Sheikha Hind bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, HE Sheikh Hassan bin Mohamed al-Thani, deputy chairman of Qatar Museums Authority board of trustees and HE Sheikh Meshaal bin Jassim bin Mohamed al-Thani, chairman of the National Council for Culture, Arts and Heritage. The Emir and the president toured the exhibition and viewed portraits made by Qatari artists, photographs of Qatari heritage, handicrafts and old Islamic coins, besides some Italian art works. Napolitano and his accompanying delegation also visited Souq Waqif, a hub of Qatar’s heritage and culture, and Education City.
