WOMAN'S MISSION IN TO END MUTILATION

Leader News - January 13, 2012

by Nicole Precent

Changin entrenched cultural values is never easy, whether it’s in your home country, or another.

Faduma Salah Musse has been working tirelessly to prevent female genital mutilation, in both her home country of Somaliland and Greater Dandenong.

Last month, she was awarded the Victorian Multicultural Award of Excellence, Victorian Multicultural Commission Ambassador Award for her work.

In 1995, she fled Somaliland as a humanitarian refugee, travelling to Pakistan before settling in Australia.

“Some cultures consider it a purification ritual,” Ms Musse said.

“I am a victim myself, and I was forced to allow my three daughters to go through it also.”

She is an African community worker and works in the family reproductive rights and education program at Southern Health’s Dandenong Springvale Community Health Service.

Ms Musse recently travelled back to Somaliland to deliver clothes, hospital beds and also educate men and women in an attempt to stop female genital mutilation.

She is planning another trip, and is now seeking funding in order to carry on the work.

“We’re trying to stop FGM in Africa,” she said.

“A lot of young girls die for no reason, because of circumcision.”

The 50-year-old, from Oakleigh South, said she worked hard because she didn’t want what happened to herself and her daughters to happen to her grandchildren.

Ms Musse needs to raise $7000 for another charity trip.
