Rome, 14 October 2005 - A group of distinguished European policy makers formed on March 2004, an Independent Commission to examine the challenges and opportunities presented by Turkey’s possible membership of the European Union. The Commission is made up of Europeans who have previously held high positions in public office. Members include former Heads of State and Government, Foreign Ministers and European Commissioners. After the opening of the accession negotiations, the Independent Commission on Turkey will have during the next few days, a new meeting in Istanbul.
